Deepa Yoganathan was awarded Teacher of the Year of 2011 by the Ophthalmology Residents at the Universityof Buffalo.
Pradeepa Yoganathan, MD, FRCSC, DABO, has been appointed the new Director of our Retina Service. She is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology of the University at Buffalo. She has special interest in surgery of the retina and vitreous which she will be performing at DeGraff Hospital. She is currently accepting new retina patients including retinal emergencies.
Dr. Yoganathan graduated from a Bachelor of Science in Physiology at McGill University in Montreal followed by medical school at Albany Medical College. She completed residency in Ophthalmology at the North Shore - Long Island Jewish Health System in New York City. She then moved to Toronto for a 2-year fellowship in Surgical and Medical Retina at the University of Toronto. Finally, she pursued an additional year of training with special interest in Hereditary Retinal Disease and Electrophysiology, Uveitis, and further surgical training in both Retina and Cataracts.
Dr. Yoganathan is well-experience in macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, vascular diseases of the retina, foveoschisis, retinal tears and detachment, ocular trauma, complications of anterior segment surgery, vitreoretinal interface abnormalities, such as epiretinal membrane and macular holes, and inflammatory disorders.
She is well trained in surgery of the macula, retina, and vitreous including lasers for diabetes and tears, injections of Avastin and Lucentis, pneumatic retinopexies, scleral buckles, vitrectomies, and secondary intraocular lens implants.
Pradeepa Yoganathan has delivered podium presentations of her research at the annual meetings of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Retina Specialists, the Retina Society, the Canadian Ophthalmological Society, and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology. Her work is published in a variety of peer-reviewed medical journals as listed below. News reports featuring her research have also appeared in magazines such as the Ophthalmology Times. Dr. Yoganathan is currently pursuing her Masters of Science in Health Research Methodology at McMaster University part-time.
Dr. Yoganathan enjoys volunteering abroad. She has performed cataract surgery in the Philippines in both 2010 and 2008. She has also volunteered in India and Croatia. In 2010, she was the recipient of the June Callwood Outstanding Achievement Award for Voluntarism.
Dr. Yoganathan is an active member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Retina Specialists, and the Canadian Ophthalmologial Society. She is board-certified in Ophthalmology in both the United States and Canada, as she is a Diplomat of the American Board of Ophthalmology and a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada. She is fluent in both English and French. She can understand Tamil and has working knowledge of Spanish.
